For many opportunities, expert skill level is not required – simply a desire to contribute to the Arboretum Society’s objectives.

Current Opportunities

Nursery and Greenhouse - Propagation and care of plants grown for sale to the public.  Help with general tasks, or work with specific plant categories according to interest and/or specialty.

Work with public to provide information and help choose plants appropriate for intended use.

* Note: Currently seeking help on Sunday afternoon shifts (Noon to 3 pm)

Educational Committee - Organizing SMAS monthly Sunday Garden Seminars and workshops which includes contacting potential speakers, obtaining program details and materials, etc.  Must be able to work & attend at least 3 to 4 seminars a year.

Garden Tour recording secretary - Take minutes of meetings (on avg. weekly) during ongoing Garden Tour project preparation (through September 14)

Street Fair Booth - Help design/plan/staff booth and activities for San Mateo Downtown Summer Fest (June 21 and 22).   Info at this link

PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL/ADMINISTRATIVE:

Maintenance/Handyperson - Weekly communication with Facility Director regarding property needs. Duties will vary throughout the year, e.g. replacing wooden boards on plant tables; maintenance of greenhouse heating/cooling equipment; manually opening/closing greenhouse vents; cleaning greenhouse drain system; replacing property light bulbs; weekly maintenance of property fountain (cleaning filter, debris, changing time clock, checking water levels), garden hose replacements, etc.

Publicity - Assist with preparing press releases and or preparation of print materials for SMAS events/activities; provide content for SMAS website; take digital photos of key events/activities; coordinate with City of San Mateo on matter of banners & permits; familiarity with graphics / digital publishing tools & printing process most helpful.
